Vampire diaries is the story of two vampire brothers obsessed with the same girl.
What happened in Season 1 -
We meet the Salvatore brothers Damon and Stefan when they return to Mystic Falls. Stefan returns for Elena, who looks exactly like Katherine Pierce; a bad ass vampire that both the brothers loved in 1864 and Damon returns to free Katherine from a tomb in which she was trapped by a witches spell when the town tried to kill all the vampires all those years ago.

What happened in Season 2 -
Katherine returns! The love triangle between Elena and the brothers suffer under her manipulations. The set of original vampires; brothers, Elijah and NiKlaus come to town in search of Elena who Klaus is after to break a curse set on vampires and werewolves by witches. After trying to protect Elena from Klaus the ritual is performed any ways and gives rise to something no one expects.

What happened in Season 3 -
The story of the Original family is revealed. Stefan leaves Mystic Falls and joins Klaus. Damon and Elena's bond becomes stronger as they search for Stefan and try to get him back to the good side. Jeremy is haunted by the ghosts of his two ex girlfriends with messes with his relationship with Bonnie. Caroline and Tyler become close although they are at two opposite sides of a supernatural war.
